Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry
Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.
Australia's selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.
"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.
"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."
Injury History
The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.
He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
